About

Life’s a painting and you’re the artist. But you are never finished. Each day is made up of a dozen different sketches, alone they will never be more than that, a sketch, yet they make up the context of our lives.

This is my sketch, one done with love.

There’s something really wonderful about seeing a seed turn into a beautiful flower or a juicy tomato.

Gardening is often thought of as a hobby for one person, but it can also be a fun activity for the whole family. It asks us to connect with nature in a way that makes us feel connected to both the ground and each other, even when we don’t have time for it.

Let’s picture a family getting ready to learn about the joys of gardening. You could start by choosing seeds together. Will it be marigolds because they make you feel happy and sunny, or herbs like basil and rosemary that will make your food taste better? This first choice isn’t just about picking plants; it’s also about getting kids excited and helping them learn how to make choices.

You might even remember your own childhood memories in gardening from the past and tell stories that weave nostalgia into this new hobby.

As you dig, feel how the ground breaks up under your fingers. You are not just putting seeds, but also building relationships that will grow over time. Kids can learn important lessons about care and patience just by planting things. Taking care of those tiny seeds every day gives them a chance to see growth firsthand. “Look at that!” someone might exclaim when they see the first green shoots poke through the ground. It’s a moment of awe that makes us all remember how wonderfully life works, even if it moves slowly sometimes.

In addition to taking care of living things, gardening is a great way to learn and find new things.

Have fun with it.

You can use apps or field guides to identify plants. Watch the pollinators fly around your flower buds as they grow, or learn how vegetables grow from tiny seeds hidden in the ground. Doing these things together not only makes relationships stronger, but it also sparks science and biological interest, which lets people learn naturally without being told what to do.

Not to be forgotten is the joy of harvesting, which is the final reward for months of hard work. The day you finally get to pick those tasty tomatoes or fragrant herbs feels like a holiday. Picture making dinner together with food you picked right outside your door. What could be more satisfying? Eating what you’ve grown starts a beautiful circle that ends with enjoying it together, which makes you appreciate both nature’s gifts and each other’s company.

People who live in houses or homes without yards shouldn’t give up! Herbs that smell good or plants with bright flowers could grow on a small deck. Container planting gives you options! Every pot becomes an oasis where plants grow in the middle of a concrete setting, showing once more that we can make beauty even when we don’t have a lot of room to do so.

Let’s use this as an opportunity to encourage kids to keep notebooks where they can write down their observations, like pictures of flowers they’ve grown or notes on how watering affects growth, and then watch how creatively their plants grow along with them! This method tells great stories about personal growth and makes you think about and get more involved in caring for the world.

When we garden together, we have a lot of fun. Maybe our dirty hands will make us laugh out loud when we push each other up when our knees hit the ground out of the blue! We learn to be strong because not everything will work out, and we accept flaws as lessons that we have to learn in life.

Let’s get our trowels and start looking into this interesting event. No matter how experienced you are or how interested you are in nature and connecting with others, gardening is a great activity for families to do together. Not only do they grow plants, but they also make memories that will last a lifetime, based in love for both family and the environment.
