About

Life’s a painting and you’re the artist. But you are never finished. Each day is made up of a dozen different sketches, alone they will never be more than that, a sketch, yet they make up the context of our lives.

This is my sketch, one done with love.

In a world that is sometimes dominated by consumerism, it is nice to find joy in the small, artistic things that you can make as a family. Have you ever stopped to think about what might be found in your trash can? Yes, of course! In reality, things that look like trash can be used for many artistic projects.

Let’s explore the bright world of handmade goods and make a family night that everyone will remember.

Think about it like this: there are a lot of wooden boxes stacked on top of each other, colorful bottle caps scattered around the table like confetti, and a bunch of old newspapers that scream for a new start. This could be useful instead of just being a mess! Gather everyone at the table in the dining room or on the floor in the living room and feel the energy. Making things out of recycled materials is lovely because it sparks your creativity without costing a lot of money. Instead of buying expensive tools, you will use things that would otherwise be thrown away. Not just to save money, but to teach our kids how to be creative.

Let’s start with something we all know: boxes made of cardboard. These useful items, which include everything from shipping boxes to empty pizza boxes, can be used to make anything, from forts to models for decoration. Tell everyone in the family to look inside their box and imagine what it could become: a cozy place to hide? A big castle? There might even be a robot getting ready to take over the living room. There are a lot of options here! We will laugh as we cut, glue, and paint together because someone will always put on a pizza box hat that looks ridiculous.

But wait! Also don’t forget those annoying bottle caps that roll around in your kitchen drawer or gather dust under your couch. These tiny round wonders can be used as weird game pieces or as interesting art. Imagine that each member of the family paints a cap to represent something important to them, like a favorite color or activity. Then we put together a colorful picture that shows our story. This activity not only makes you think, but it also makes you talk about what makes each of us unique.

About the scrap paper:

Old newspapers and magazines are great for making collages or folding projects. Every torn piece brings back memories, like the fancy travel magazine from our trip last summer or newspaper cuttings from events in our community that we have shared. Some of our shared experiences are woven into these pages, which makes us feel better and helps us remember good times.

Let’s be okay with mistakes as our craft night goes on! Each new idea is beautiful on its own; there is no one right way to do it. Not just real things, working together on projects helps us make memories that will last long after we’ve cleaned up our workspace. Even though it’s messy (hands are covered in glue and paint is everywhere), isn’t that what makes it so much fun?

Now add one more level: long-term use! Our kids learn about being responsible to the world when we use recyclables as our main art supplies. We teach kids that anything can be used and has worth if we put our minds to it.

So gather all the recyclables you were going to throw away and plan a craft night with them one night, or better yet, make it a regular event. By turning trash into treasure, you will not only improve family ties, but you will also learn to respect home innovation and reuse.

As we say goodbye to this fun-filled evening full of laughter and art, let’s think about how much these kinds of events bring us together, both physically and mentally. Many more nights of making art together as a family, where love and imagination are what make art what it is, not how much it costs.

How about tonight? What material will you find to be valuable?
